A new controlled-temperature Atego BlueTec Hybrid joins the Norbert Dentressangle fleet

A new controlled-temperature Atego BlueTec Hybrid joins the Norbert Dentressangle fleet

- Norbert Dentressangle has taken delivery of a second Atego BlueTec Hybrid

- The Atego BlueTec Hybrid, an environmentally friendly truck

David Charvier, Director of Norbert Dentressangle’s refrigerated site at Miramas, has received the keys for the first hybrid truck specifically assigned to the transport of fresh and frozen produce.

Norbert Dentressangle, a major European player in transport and logistics, at the forefront of innovation and committed to reducing its carbon footprint, has just taken delivery of its second Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid, the first hybrid truck specifically intended for the transport of goods under controlled temperature. This 12-tonne truck will be operated out of the Norbert
Dentressangle site at Miramas (Bouches-du-Rhône, S.E. France) and dedicated to the delivery of controlled-temperature (chilled and frozen) products, mainly for the food industry. The first (ambient temperature) truck of this type was delivered a year ago and operates in the Paris region.

The Atego BlueTec Hybrid 1222 L enables haulage companies to significantly improve their ecological footprint by:

-  reducing CO2 emissions by 25%, and

- responding to specific constraints in terms of noise emissions since the truck meets “PIEK” standards, which stipulate that the noise level for night deliveries must not exceed 60 decibels, the equivalent of a normal conversation.

The diesel engine block, an OM 924 4.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 160kW (218hp) and a maximum torque of 810 Nm between 1200 and 1600 rpm, is combined with a 44 kW (60hp) water-cooled electric motor offering a combined maximum torque of 420 Nm, and lithium-ion batteries installed in the wheelbase. The three-phase electric motor is installed between the engine and the gearbox, a G85 Telligent six-speed automatic. The two engines can function in parallel or separately. If the battery charge level is sufficient, the Atego BlueTec Hybrid can operate solely on electric. In all circumstances, the diesel engine continues to run in order to support the truck’s energy needs – power steering, braking, etc. The diesel takes over when necessary – imperceptibly thanks to a solenoid-type clutch. The batteries are recharged during braking or deceleration.

In addition, the Atego BlueTec Hybrid series is equipped as standard with a Stop/Start system giving additional benefits in terms of fuel consumption and noise reduction. The hybrid drive system weighs only 350 kilos, which does not affect the payload.

With this investment, Norbert Dentressangle has provided additional proof of its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its transport activities. As road haulage is – and will be for a long time to come – the most efficient mode of goods transport, the starting point for reducing the environmental impact of transport lies in reducing the environmental impact of lorries.
